GEWEX Ambassadorship and Lifetime Contribution Award
GEWEX has substantially contributed to the development of our understanding of the water and energy cycles of the Earth system (See Stephens et al. 2022). The GEWEX community has decided to honor their colleagues who have made this international program possible by contributing a significant amount of their time and energy and who can continue to promote GEWEX in the broadest sense with two new distinctions: the title of GEWEX Ambassadors and the GEWEX Lifetime Contribution award.
GEWEX Ambassadors
To honor colleagues who have contributed a significant amount of their time and energy to GEWEX and who can continue to promote GEWEX in the broadest sense; e.g., encourage other colleagues to be part of the GEWEX community, keep funders and stakeholders abreast of the latest developments when opportunity arises and represent the GEWEX community at selected events.
In return GEWEX can provide:
- Free registration to our GEWEX Open Science Conferences (OSCs), PAN-GEWEX and PAN-GASS meetings
- Travel support for meetings where they are asked to represent GEWEX
- Standing invitation to our SSG meeting and conference calls
- Specific mention on our website and the GEWEX Quarterly
We foresee the following criteria:
- this is a special group of distinguished leaders who have contributed to GEWEX through a number of years (> 5 years; serving as SSG chair/co-chair or member; or panel chair/co-chair)
- these people are still active in their research
- they can be nominated by anybody (including self), first vetted by SSG co-chairs and the Director, and then approved by the SSG and panel co-chairs each year at the SSG Meeting.
- At most 2 new Ambassadors can be approved each year and the distinction is attributed for 5 years (so that the total number of Ambassadors is ten or less at any time).
GEWEX Lifetime Contribution Award
This is an exceptional award to honor colleagues who over the span of their career have contributed in a substantial way to GEWEX. The candidate is widely recognized to have been exceptional in their service to GEWEX and as such have made a significant positive impact on GEWEX research and/or the community.
The award comprises of the following:
- An award certificate signifying the honor
- Free registration to our GEWEX Open Science Conference and a one-time 2000 USD contribution in the form of travel support to accept the award
- Special mention on our website and in the GEWEX Quarterly
We foresee the following criteria:
- this is a small group of distinguished senior scientists and leaders who have contributed to GEWEX and its community through most of their career
- these people can be retired but can still be active in their research
- they can be nominated by anybody (including self), first vetted by SSG co-chairs and the Director, and then approved by the SSG and panel co-chairs once every ~4 years at the SSG Meeting before the GEWEX Open Science Conference
- Only one award every GEWEX Open Science Conference will be considered (roughly 1 every 4 years)
